Monday, 15 April 2002
12:00 noon

206 Ingraham

Anton Pelinka is Austria's best-known and most prolific political scientist. His work has appeared in many languages and he has written widely about both Austrian and European politics. His most recent book in English is Austria: Out of the Shadows of the Past (Westview Press). Pelinka has held many distinguished fellowships, visiting professorships and academic positions in Europe and the United States, including at Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Chicago.

In his talk, Professor Pelinka will provide a systematic analysis of the transformation process in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Yugoslavia. What happened in 1989 - what did the transformation in all the Central-Eastern European countries have in common, and what were the differences between the countries?
