In response to a mounting interest in Non-Government Organizations among UW faculty and students, CIFS is pleased to announce its NGO Speaker Series. Now more than ever, NGOs play a valuable role in the world’s social and economic affairs, operating within both the public and private sectors.

Jeanne Sulzer will introduce the organization and action priorities of the International Federation of Human Rights, as well as discuss the specific nature of her work. The FIDH is an influential NGO that enjoys consultative status with the United Nations, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the International Labor Organization and observer status with the African Commission of Human and People’s Rights.

The FIDH mandate is to act effectively to ensure the respect of all the rights of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its Priority themes are: the protection of Human Rights Defenders, Justice for the victims and Globalization respectful of Human Rights. Founded in 1922, it includes 142 national member organizations in more than 100 countries. Like its member organizations, FIDH is linked to no party, no religion, and is independent vis-à-vis all governments.

Sulzer has worked as International Justice Director at the FIDH since 1999. She has been working on the establishment and the universal ratification campaign of the International Criminal Court since the Rome Diplomatic Conference. She coordinates the Legal Action Group of the FIDH, a netgroup of over 70 lawyers and legal experts from around the world who assist victims of international crimes in bringing criminal cases on their behalf before national and international courts.
